Being stuck in a career rut is common. If you suffer from career envy every time you see someone else making a living doing what you love, you already know it’s time for a change. Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge to get from where you are to where you want to be. Following these five simple steps will help you to recognize your career goals and get started in achieving success. The first step is the simplest of all. The fact that you’re reading this article means you’re already halfway there.

Step One: Start Believing

Perception really is reality. Belief in your dreams means letting go of that nagging voice in your head that keeps telling you nothing is possible. The best way to remind yourself that everything is possible is to take a look at other people’s success stories. Google successful business people and find out how they got started. Read about their struggles leading up to their moment of glory. Remember that if it could happen for them it can happen for you.

Step Two: Make a List

Approach your dream realistically if you want it to come true. The first thing you’ll need to do is make a list of the requirements necessary to achieve your ultimate goal. For example, if you want to be the weatherman, find out what that entails. Do you have to go to school to be the weatherman or do you just have to look good on camera? If you just have to look good on camera then take a video of yourself and see if you look good on camera. If you don’t look good on camera examine the options you could utilize to change that. This could mean something subtle like a new jacket, or it could mean something drastic like plastic surgery. You didn’t realize you might have to do something drastic did you? That leads us to step three.

Step Three: Figure Out Which Sacrifices You’re Willing to Make

Dream jobs always require more sacrifices than you were expecting. Professional athletes spend months, sometimes years away from their families. Award winning authors spend decades in poverty before conjuring up that hit novel. Everything worthwhile comes at a price. Once you figure out what the price of your dream job is, ask yourself if you’re willing to pay it.

Step Four: Change Your Location

Most glamorous jobs require travel. If you want to be a doctor, your location should be a college. If your dream job is Video production San Francisco is the only city you should reside in. Florida is the ideal state for video game strategists and singers are all about New York City.

Now that you know where you are and where you need to be, the rest of the journey is in your hands. Good luck chasing that cool job and if you start doubting yourself, wear red. Red is a power color. A hint of red will immediately improve your mood and boost your ego so you can get the guts to keep on moving.
